Patch materials & backings guide

Start with the look of the patch, then choose how it attaches. Embroidered and PVC patches use different materials and need different artwork and approval checks.

One Cheburashka design, three surface treatments

The same Cheburashka design as embroidered thread, flat-topped 2D PVC and rounded 3D PVC, with close-up details.

Embroidered

Visible thread and textile texture give a classic stitched appearance. Simplify small lettering and fine gaps; review stitch direction and thread colors in the sample.

2D PVC

Molded PVC with flat-topped raised levels and recessed areas. It can have physical depth even though it is called 2D. Mark the level of each area.

3D PVC

Molded PVC with rounded or sculpted relief. Use front and angled references to explain how the raised surfaces should curve.

A 2D PVC patch can still have raised layers. 3D adds sculpted or rounded surfaces. Do not use “3D” alone as a depth specification: show the intended profile and check it on the sample.

Choose the backing for the job

Four labeled backing concepts: Velcro with both mating parts, sew-on stitching, iron-on heat-activated film on an embroidered patch, and temporary adhesive with peel-away paper.

Velcro

For removable patches on a matching loop panel. Specify hook only or hook plus a separate loop panel, and how the loop panel attaches.

Sew-on

For stitching to the garment. Confirm an embroidered border or a suitable sewing channel on PVC, and check access to stitch the garment.

Iron-on

A heat-activated backing for a compatible textile patch and garment. Confirm fabric suitability and the production-specific application instructions. Do not assume PVC can be ironed.

Temporary adhesive

A peel-and-stick option for temporary use. Confirm material compatibility and surface suitability. Do not assume wash durability or permanent attachment.

Material and backing compatibility

What to confirm before ordering

VelcroSpecify hook only or a matching loop panel too.Specify the molded patch and how the hook backing is attached.
Sew-onConfirm edge construction and stitching access.Request a suitable sewing channel or edge for stitching.
Iron-onRequest compatible adhesive and instructions for your fabric.Do not assume compatibility. Get explicit production approval before applying heat.
Temporary adhesiveConfirm the surface, intended duration and removal expectations.Confirm whether adhesive is offered for this construction and use.

Do not use a generic heat setting from the internet. Application temperature, pressure, duration and garment compatibility must come from the instructions for your actual patch. Confirm care after attachment as well as initial adhesion.

A practical way to choose

Removing or swapping patches?

Start with Velcro. Check whether the garment already has a loop panel and whether you need a separate matching panel.

Permanent garment placement?

Discuss sew-on first. Check access for stitching, the garment layers and the right border or sewing channel.

Want a heat-applied textile patch?

Provide the fabric and care label. Confirm heat compatibility and use the supplied application instructions.

One event or short-term placement?

Discuss temporary adhesive. Share the exact surface and removal expectations; avoid assuming it is washable.

  • Test the intended size on the garment or bag.
  • Record the face material and backing separately.
  • Confirm the border, colors, lettering and relief profile.
  • Review front, back and angled sample photos.
  • Approve a sample attachment on the intended fabric where feasible.
