Custom Patches for IDF Units: The Complete Ordering Guide

Every unit has its symbols — the insignia, the inside jokes, the operation names that only your team understands. A custom patch turns that identity into something you can wear on a uniform, a plate carrier or a duffel bag. This guide covers everything a מ"פ, a reservist organizer or a lone soldier coordinator needs to know before ordering custom patches for a unit.

Embroidered or PVC: choosing the right patch for military use

Embroidered patches are the classic. Thread on twill fabric, up to nine colors, with the texture everyone recognizes from official unit insignia. They suit formal emblems, traditional designs and anything meant to echo the look of issued patches.

PVC (rubber) patches are the modern standard for tactical use. They are waterproof, colorfast, survive field conditions and washing machines equally well, and support 2D and 3D relief — which makes logos and mascots pop. For morale patches, most units today choose PVC.

Woven patches sit between the two: flatter than embroidery, capable of much finer detail. Choose woven when your design includes small text — coordinates, dates, mottos — that embroidery thread would swallow.

Backing: velcro is the default, and for good reason

Hook-and-loop (velcro) backing lets the same patch move between a uniform, a vest and a bag — and lets soldiers remove it when regulations require. We attach the hook side to the patch and include the loop side so it can be sewn or stuck anywhere. Iron-on and sew-on backings are available for caps, civilian jackets and keepsake versions for families.

Design rules that save you a revision round

A few constraints make the difference between a sharp patch and a muddy one:

  • Text no smaller than 5–6 mm tall for embroidery; woven and PVC can go smaller.
  • Limit the palette — 4–6 colors keeps edges clean and costs down.
  • Bold outlines read better than thin lines, especially on PVC relief.
  • Standard sizes run 7–10 cm for shoulder and chest patches; round morale patches are usually 8 cm.

Don't have artwork? That's normal. Most units come to us with a phone sketch, a screenshot from the unit WhatsApp group, or just an idea — our free design service turns it into production-ready art, and you approve a photographed sample before the full run is produced.

Minimums, timelines and budget

Our minimum is 50 patches per design, with pricing improving meaningfully at 100, 250 and 500+ — convenient for a company-sized order or a battalion event. Standard production runs 4–6 weeks from artwork approval: roughly one week for the mold and sample, the rest for production and delivery anywhere in Israel. Planning patches for a סוף מסלול ceremony or a reunion? Start at least two months out.

One order, several items

Many units pair patches with matching enamel pins — patches for the uniform, pins for the ceremony and for families. Combining products in one order shares the design work and shipping. For larger orders or resale, see our wholesale program.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reproduce our official unit insignia?
We produce patches based on artwork you provide or approve. For official symbols, make sure your unit allows reproduction — most morale and reunion patches are original designs inspired by the unit rather than exact copies.

Can different soldiers' names go on the same design?
Name variations require separate molds for metal products, but for embroidered patches small text changes are often possible — ask us with your specific design.

What does it cost?
Pricing depends on size, type and quantity. Send the design and quantity on WhatsApp and you'll have a confirmed quote within one business day.
